Fat Man Running – the recipe Rezept

A drink that feels like a sprint through the jungle: sweet, sour, spicy, and with a hint of adventure. The Fat Man Running combines brown Rum with Blue Curaçao and lime, before Ginger Ale transforms the mix into a fizzy escape. The recipe thrives on the balance between fruit and spice – and on the fact that the ice not only cools but also gradually releases the flavors in layers. Perfect for anyone who knows after the first sip: someone is running for their life here.

And this is what you need for the Fat Man Running

4 cl brown Rum

1 cl Blue Curaçao

1 cl lime juice

10 cl Ginger Ale

Ice cubes for mixing

Crushed ice for serving

This is what matters

The trick lies in the mixer timing: 10 seconds are enough to combine the ingredients without the lime juice becoming too dominant. If you don’t have a mixer, you can also shake the ingredients briefly in a shaker – but then add the ice to the glass only afterwards, otherwise the drink will dilute too quickly. The crushed ice should be coarse, almost like snow, so that it melts slowly and releases the flavors in layers. A stirrer as a garnish is no coincidence: it helps to bring the lower, more concentrated layers to the top when the drink is already half empty.

Variations

  • Fat Man Walking — Replace the Ginger Ale with 8 cl cold Tonic Water and add a pinch of black pepper over the crushed ice. Less fizzy, but with more bite – ideal for anyone who wants to drink the cocktail more slowly.
  • Fat Man Swimming — Add 2 cl coconut cream and mix everything with a handful of Crushed Ice. Serve in a small Tiki cup with a pineapple slice as a garnish. More tropical, creamier, but still with the sharp contrast of the Blue Curaçao.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Triple Sec instead of Blue Curaçao?

Yes, but the drink loses its characteristic color and some of its fruity depth. Blue Curaçao has a slightly bitter note that Triple Sec doesn’t offer. If you use Triple Sec, add a splash of lemon juice to maintain the balance.

Why does the ice have to be crushed?

Crushed ice cools faster and melts more slowly than cubes – this prevents the drink from becoming too diluted. Additionally, it gives the Fat Man Running its typical, almost slushy texture, which enhances the contrast between the sweet and spicy flavors.

Can I make the drink without alcohol?

Replace the brown Rum with 4 cl alcohol-free rum-flavored syrup and double the amount of Ginger Ale. The flavor will be sweeter and less complex, but still refreshing.
