Dragon Lady – the Recipe Rezept

The Dragon Lady is a short, intense drink that combines Rum with the freshness of orange and the depth of Grenadine. The name fits: sharp in taste, but with a sweet seduction. No Rum is wasted here – the golden Rum provides the base, while White Curaçao and Grenadine add complex sweetness. The Bitter Lemon lifts the drink above the mass of sweet Rum cocktails and makes it a true bar classic for those who don’t just want something fruity.

And this is what you need for the Dragon Lady

2 cl gold Rum

2 cl fresh orange juice

1 dash White Curaçao (approx. 0.2 cl)

1 dash Grenadine (approx. 0.2 cl)

Ice cubes

Bitter Lemon (chilled, to top up)

1 orange slice (garnish)

1 strip of orange peel (bitter, for garnish)

This is what matters

The trick lies in the timing of the Grenadine: add it to the shaker only after the other ingredients have already been shaken briefly. This way, it distributes evenly without settling at the bottom. And: use fresh orange juice – from the bottle, the drink will taste flat. The orange peel strip is no mere decoration; it adds a bitter note that carries the Rum. Squeeze it briefly over the glass just before serving so that the oils spray onto the surface.

Variations

  • Spicy Dragon — For a spicier version, lightly press 2 slices of fresh chili (with seeds) in the shaker before adding the other ingredients. Let the chili infuse briefly with the Rum, then shake as in the original recipe. The spiciness should be noticeable but not dominant.
  • Tropical Dragon — Replace the gold Rum with dark Rum and add 1 cl pineapple juice. Omit the Grenadine and instead use 0.5 cl Falernum (spiced syrup). Garnish with a pineapple slice and a cocktail cherry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Tonic Water instead of Bitter Lemon?

No. Bitter Lemon has a unique bitter note that balances the Rum and the sweetness. Tonic Water is too sweet and would overwhelm the drink. If no Bitter Lemon is available, use lemonade and add a dash of Angostura bitters.

Why is the cocktail called Dragon Lady?

The name plays on the combination of sweetness and heat – like a seductress with a bite. There is no official origin story, but the drink fits its name: intense, yet not overpowering.

Can I make the drink without White Curaçao?

Yes, but then the complex citrus note will be missing. Replace it with 0.5 cl Triple Sec or omit it entirely if you prefer simplicity. The drink will then be less aromatic but still drinkable.
