Digestifs – what are they?

Digestifs are alcoholic beverages traditionally consumed after a meal to aid digestion. These drinks are often stronger and more robust in flavour. Well-known examples of digestifs include Cognac, Armagnac, Grappa, schnapps, herbal liqueurs such as Chartreuse or bitters like Fernet. Digestifs are often served in small quantities and at room temperature. They are meant to round off a meal and provide a sense of satisfaction after eating.
