Cocktail Recipes – Colada Special Rezept

The Piña Colada is the epitome of tropical relaxation: sweet, creamy, and with the unmistakable aroma of coconut and pineapple. But who says a classic can’t be improved? The Colada Special builds on the original, adding an unexpected note that makes the drink more complex and interesting – without losing its soul. Instead of just mixing coconut rum and pineapple juice, a dash of Bourbon Whiskey is added here, giving it depth and a slightly smoky spice. The result is no longer just a simple beach drink, but a cocktail that also impresses on a cozy evening on the balcony or in a bar with standards. The combination of sweet fruit, creamy coconut notes, and the warm whisky depth makes it a versatile drink that works both as an aperitif and as a digestif. And the best part: it’s mixed in five minutes – perfect for spontaneous moments of enjoyment.

Here’s what you need for the Colada Special

4 cl white rum

2 cl Bourbon Whiskey

4 cl coconut milk (fresh or from a can, but not light)

6 cl pineapple juice (freshly pressed or high-quality bottled)

1 cl sugar syrup (1:1)

1 splash of lime juice (fresh, approx. 0.5 cl)

1 pinch of salt (optional, for balance)

The key to success

The trick is in the mixing: many people make the mistake of simply shaking or stirring the ingredients, but a Colada relies on creaminess. A blender is essential here, as only then does the coconut milk properly combine with the rum and pineapple juice. Make sure the coconut milk isn’t too cold – if it comes straight from the fridge, it can become lumpy. Take it out 10 minutes beforehand or warm it slightly in the microwave (max. 10 seconds). The Bourbon Whiskey shouldn’t dominate: 2 cl is enough to make the drink more interesting without destroying the tropical lightness. A good Bourbon with vanilla and caramel notes pairs perfectly with the coconut milk. If you prefer it a little fruitier, you can increase the lime juice to 1 cl – this adds a fresh acidity that balances the sweetness.

Variations

  • Spicy Colada Special — For those who like it spicier: add a thin slice of fresh ginger or a splash of chili syrup to the blender. The ginger adds a subtle heat that surprisingly complements the coconut note, while the chili syrup adds a smoky sweetness. Make sure not to blend the ginger for too long, or it will turn bitter – 5 seconds is enough. Alternatively, you can sprinkle a pinch of cayenne pepper over the finished drink.
  • Coffee Colada Special — Replace the Bourbon Whiskey with 2 cl of cold espresso or cold brew coffee. The coffee aromas pair surprisingly well with the coconut milk and give the drink a slightly bitter note that balances the sweetness. This works especially well with an espresso that’s roasted slightly darker – the smoky notes complement the tropical flavors perfectly. For an extra creamy version, you can add 1 cl of condensed milk.
  • Non-alcoholic Colada Special — Leave out the rum and Bourbon, and replace them with 6 cl of non-alcoholic rum-flavored syrup (available commercially or online). The syrup gives the typical rum note without the alcohol. Alternatively, you can use 4 cl of coconut water and 2 cl of vanilla syrup – the result is lighter but still aromatic. For more depth, you can mix in a pinch of cinnamon or half a crushed cardamom pod.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use coconut cream instead of fresh coconut milk?

Yes, but with caution: coconut cream is much more concentrated and sweeter than coconut milk. Use only half the amount (2 cl instead of 4 cl) and dilute it with a little water or pineapple juice to adjust the consistency. Otherwise, the drink will become too heavy and sticky. Fresh coconut milk from a can is the best choice, as it has natural creaminess without being overpowering.

Why does my Colada Special taste watery?

This is usually due to the ice: if you use large ice cubes or the glass isn’t properly chilled, the ice melts too quickly and dilutes the drink. Always use crushed ice and fill the glass with it before pouring in the cocktail. If you don’t have a blender, you can also shake the ingredients in a shaker with ice and then strain over fresh crushed ice – this gives a creamier texture than simply stirring.

Can I replace the Bourbon Whiskey with another whisky?

In principle, yes, but the taste changes: a Scotch whisky adds smoky notes that not everyone likes, while a rye whiskey is spicier and drier. Bourbon is the best choice because its vanilla and caramel notes pair perfectly with coconut and pineapple. If you want to experiment, try a mild Japanese whisky – it’s often very balanced and suits tropical flavors well.

Do I have to use fresh pineapple juice?

Freshly squeezed pineapple juice naturally tastes best because it has more acidity and freshness. However, in practice, high-quality bottled juice is also sufficient as long as it is not from concentrate. Make sure it contains no additives like sugar or preservatives – the juice should consist only of pineapple and possibly a little ascorbic acid (vitamin C). If you are using fresh juice, strain it through a fine sieve to remove any pulp residues that could cloud the drink.

How long does the Colada Special keep in the refrigerator?

The drink is best when freshly prepared, but you can store the mixture (without ice) in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. The coconut milk may settle slightly, so shake or stir the mixture well before serving. Then serve it over fresh crushed ice. You should not store it for more than a day, as the flavors will become flatter over time and the lime juice will lose its fresh taste.
