Chartreuse – What is it?
Chartreuse is a French liqueur produced by Carthusian monks. There are two main varieties of Chartreuse: Green Chartreuse and Yellow Chartreuse.
1. *Green Chartreuse:* This variety is deep green and has a high alcohol content. It is made from a blend of herbs, spices and plant extracts whose recipe is kept secret. The taste is intense and complex with herbal, spicy and sweet notes.
2. *Yellow Chartreuse:* This version is slightly milder and sweeter than the green variety. The recipe also contains a variety of herbs but is less intense.
Chartreuse is often enjoyed neat as a digestif but can also be used in cocktails. The exact recipe of the liqueur is a closely guarded secret of the Carthusian monks.
