Blueberry Basil Limonade – the Recipe Rezept

This lemonade combines the sweet acidity of ripe blueberries with the aromatic kick of fresh basil. Not a simple purée, but a clear, intense juice pressed through a fine sieve – so the texture remains light and the color radiant. Perfect for hot days or as an alcohol-free base for spritz variations. No frills, just fresh ingredients and one detail that makes all the difference: the basil leaves are briefly pressed with the blueberries before blending to release the essential oils.

And this is what you need for the Blueberry Basil Limonade

250 g fresh blueberries (plus extra for garnishing)

15 g fresh basil leaves (plus extra for garnishing)

200 ml fresh lime juice (about 8–10 limes)

100 g sugar (or to taste)

1 litre cold water

Ice cubes

This is what matters

Straining is the key: if you don’t press the purée through a fine sieve, you’ll end up with a cloudy, almost pulpy lemonade. A hair sieve or a sieve lined with kitchen paper will work in a pinch, but a genuine stainless steel tea sieve will give the clearest juice. If you prefer it extra clean, you can strain the liquid a second time through a sieve lined with a clean cloth – the result is an almost clear, ruby-red lemonade with a more intense flavor. Tip: Don’t throw away the remaining solids; stir them into a quick dessert with some yogurt and honey.

Variations

  • Blueberry Basil Spritz — add 4 cl dry Prosecco and 2 cl soda water to the finished lemonade. Garnish with a basil flower – the petals add an additional aroma.
  • Gin Basil Smash Limonade — place 5 cl London Dry Gin in the shaker, shake with ice and strain over the finished lemonade. Garnish with a lemon slice and basil.
  • Wodka-Blaubeer-Limonade — add 4 cl Wodka directly to the glass, fill with ice and pour the lemonade over it. Garnish with a lemon twist and blueberries.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use frozen blueberries?

Yes, but they release less juice and the lemonade will be slightly watery. Thaw the berries briefly in cold water and press them thoroughly after blending. The flavor remains intense, but the color will be paler.

How long does the lemonade keep in the fridge?

Maximum 24 hours – after that, it loses freshness and the basil leaves can turn bitter. Best served immediately or prepare the juice without water and dilute as needed.

Can I use other sweeteners instead of sugar?

Agave syrup or honey work, but they change the texture: honey makes the lemonade cloudy, agave syrup can leave a slight aftertaste. For clear results, sugar remains the best choice.

Why does my lemonade taste bitter?

Either too many basil stems were used (only the leaves!) or the lemonade stood too long with the solids. Always strain and serve immediately.
