Alligator – the recipe Rezept

The Alligator is a short, neon-green shot that tastes of melon and citrus – but with a dry bite from the vermouth. The combination of sweet Midori and herbaceous Vermouth Dry seems harmless at first sip, but the vodka gives the drink a sharp note that only unfolds afterwards. Perfect for quick rounds or as a colorful start to a cocktail session.

And this is what you need for the Alligator

4 cl vodka

2 cl Midori (melon liqueur)

1 cl Vermouth Dry

¼ tsp fresh lemon juice

Ice cubes

What matters here

The trick lies in the vermouth: it must not be too old, otherwise the oxidative note will dominate and mask the freshness of the melon. Use a Vermouth Dry that has been stored in the fridge for no longer than three months after opening. A single drop of lemon juice is enough – more would tip the balance. If you want to make the drink even more intense, rub a thin strip of lemon peel over the glass before serving and let the oils drip onto the surface.

Variations

  • Alligator Sour — Replace the Vermouth Dry with 1 cl lemon juice and add 1 cl simple syrup. Shake, strain into a sour glass, and garnish with a half lemon wheel. Fruitier, but less complex.
  • Green Dragon — Replace the vodka with 4 cl gin and the Vermouth Dry with 1 cl Chartreuse Verte. Sharper, more herbal, and with a longer finish.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make the Alligator without vermouth?

Yes, but the drink loses its characteristic dryness. Replace the vermouth with 1 cl dry sherry (fino) or leave it out entirely and increase the vodka to 5 cl. The flavor will then be purer melon and citrus, but flatter.

Why isn’t the Alligator creamy even though Midori is sweet?

Midori is a melon-based liqueur, but with a watery consistency. The sweetness comes from sugar, not cream or dairy products. If you want a creamy version, you can add 1 cl cream or coconut milk – but then the drink becomes something else (e.g., a melon White Russian).

Can I mix the Alligator with other liqueurs?

Theoretically yes, but Midori is crucial here for the color and flavor. Alternatives like blue Curaçao (for a blue variant) or peach liqueur completely change the character. Stick to melon liqueur if you want the classic Alligator.
